The Paraguayan War the bloodiest conflict in Latin-American history, it was fought between Paraguay and the allied countries of Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. Paraguay had been involved with arguments regarding the boundary and tariffs of its’ neighbors Argentina and Brazil. (Uruguay had fallen to the will of Argentina and Brazil, thus they were another enemy of Paraguay.) In 1864, Brazil had ousted the leader of Uruguay and Francisco Solano Lopez went to war because he believed that the regional balance of power was threatened. Paraguay built up a 50,000-man army, the strongest in Latin America army of the time (Phillips).
